Men’s running pants are particularly personal items of clothing. They need to fit comfortably, loose enough so that you can move freely, and also need to provide muscle support, keep you warm or cool as the weather demands, and be durable and easy to look after. Here’s our short guide to the best out there.
The competition was stiff, with plenty of high-quality running pants for men available, but BALEAF Men’s Lightweight Jogger Pants make our top pick. At around $30 they also offer great value for money. Made from a combination of nylon and spandex, they’re versatile and have a pleasantly stretchy feel.
These running pants have mesh side panels to create ventilation and tapered elasticized cuffs for a secure fit at your ankles. The waist is also elasticized and supplemented by a drawstring for you to adjust their fit. As one reviewer summed them up: “Comfortable and fitted. You can stretch, run, climb, ride and do pretty much anything in these pants.”
The Hanes Sport Men’s X-Temp Performance Training Pant are the cheapest, yet by no means less functional running pants men we’ve selected. Retailing at around $14, they’re made from 100% polyester containing X-Temp technology helps to keep you cool by adapting to your body temperature.
They have a comfortable fit, with an elastic waist and draw cord over it. There’s an open hem at the bottom and you get side seam pockets which are also open. Ventilation is aided by a micro-knit pique in the fabric, and you’ll also benefit from sweat-wicking properties. Reviewers have raved about them too: “If you want some real great running trousers, get these. They’ll do you proud!”
The most popular running pants we’ve tracked down are the adidas Men’s Tiro 19 Pants. Their price point is in their favor for a start, selling at about $23. They come in a very wide selection of colors, and have a trendy slim fit. The legs taper to the bottom where they’re closed with ankle zips, so you can easily get them on or off over your training shoes.
They have a stretchy fabric in the lower leg area, made from breathable quick-drying material, and contain Climacool technology to help cool you down while you’re running. Their popularity is best left to this reviewer to describe: “In the last year I’ve bought five pairs of running pants. So far these are my favorite. They fit very nicely.”
What to look for in running pants
Probably the most important thing to remember when you’re looking for men’s running pants is that they should ideally be made from synthetic material. This may seem counter-intuitive, but a natural material like cotton tends to absorb sweat, but doesn’t dispense with it efficiently enough. This can be especially uncomfortable when it’s cold, because the sweat patches cool down rapidly, as we all know. So buy running pants made from materials like polyester.
Running pants also need a nice tight fit. They shouldn’t be restrictive, but the tighter the fabric the less you’ll feel a wind chill effect, the more muscle support you’ll get, and the more flexibility you’ll enjoy. The tighter fitting pants will also help to dispense with sweat more effectively, as well as providing better breathability.
This doesn’t refer to the logos or exterior design, but rather the specific details that separate good pants from the best ones. Look for pockets that have zip closings, to keep valuables more secure. Choose zips at the ankles, elasticized hems or open hems, depending on your own preference. You may want ones with reflective strips if you run in low light conditions. Extra-tapered ankles and rubber grip rings in the lower part of the leg, prevent ride-up while you’re running.
