What to look for in skate decks

Size

The size of the skate decks you choose all depends on the type of skateboarding you want to do. The main categories are old-school decks, which have longer wheelbases than modern decks, and are also wider for bowl skating; cruiser or shaped decks with a medium length designed for casual skating just to get around; and longboard decks, which are the best choice for beginners, as they’re the longest and widest.

Construction

Skate decks primarily come in three forms of construction. The traditional 7-ply wood construction typically uses dense and flexible maple wood. These give excellent durability and great pop off the ground, and are still firm favorites with skaters. More high-tech construction uses fiberglass and other materials for heavy landing tricks. Other versions have slick decks made with plastic or vinyl coatings, designed for slide tricks.

Curvature

The other consideration when buying skate board decks is the direction of their curve. There are two basic types: cambers and rockers. Cambers are slightly raised in the middle, if you look at the length-wise curvatures, while rockers have lowered middles. Rocker decks are best for carving and downhill skating. Simple recreational decks will have a neutral curvature.

Why trust us?

In addition to our own research we consult with leading physiotherapist Ignacio Suárez, who is also a postural re-education specialist. He advises us on the biomechanical interplay between skate decks and the human body, specifically focusing on joint impact and torque, which can put strain on the joint ligaments, leading to referred pain in the legs as well. He is able to apply his many decades of experience into confirming that our selections also help to promote long term physical health and prevent unnecessary injuries through bad design.

He recommends that beginners be very careful when choosing a skate deck, and to not be too ambitious. It’s always better to have a board that you eventually replace when you have gotten better, than to use a board that is too advanced for you, which can risk injuries
